The Conservative Movement of modern times has had three basic, and mutually contradictory, tenets: (1) “Getting Big Government Off Our Backs” by rolling back statism and establishing a free market economy; (2) crushing civil liberties whenever crime, “national security,” or “morality” are threatened, i.e. whenever civil liberties become important; and (3) seeking an all-out political and military confrontation with “atheistic world Communism,” in particular its satanic headquarters in the Kremlin, up to and including a nuclear showdown.

Updated, (3) is now confrontation against “terrorism” which is so amorphous that when they say “terrorist countries” they mean the entire world.

Archaic Auturgy: I am sick of this school and these wanton people

terrorofexistence:

I am tired of being thrown-in-with and being amongst this saturnalia of statism, and control freaks of mathematical economics.

I am tired of my philosophy peers who get hard-ons or their lips wet at the sound of their own copy-cat and tiring voice of ideals.

I am tired of watching my political…

Sarah’s Tale Of Arctic Warming - Science News

Observations from one remote village as its climate changes

Sarah James brings stories of change affecting her Caribou People in Alaska.J. Raloff MIAMI — Sarah James remembers playing outdoors as a child even in the dead of winter. It often hit -70 degrees Fahrenheit, although not for prolonged periods. But she and the other kids, tired of being house-bound, just bundled up in snow suits and boots made from caribou skins. Even such frigid temps never put life — or play — on hold, recalls this 67-year-old resident of Arctic Village, Alaska. Today, winter cold snaps seldom dip below -40 degrees, she says. And snows, that used to begin falling in August or September, now typically arrive in late October or November. Over a half-century or so, her town of some 150 Athabascan Indians has watched as the formerly extreme but fairly predictable climate in this amazingly remote region of inland Alaska has become warmer and more erratic. Overall, that’s definitely not been a change for the better, James says.

The other night, I ran into a veteran journalist, a writer who I always considered was among the “plugged in.” Yet when I told him I was reporting on Occupy Wall Street, he plugged out, and stared at me cluelessly. “What do they want,” he asked, echoing the questioned raised endlessly by TV pundits and editorial commentators. He didn’t seem to know or care who “they” are, or why they have taken to living in parks to make their point. He and his colleagues seem to be saying that to understand what’s going on, it all be first compressed into a press release with bullet points they can simplify further.

New York Times Suing Government For Refusing To Reveal Its Secret PATRIOT Act Interpretation | Disinformation

Perhaps the most perverse aspect of the PATRIOT Act is the federal government’s refusal to reveal how it interprets and puts into practice the (vague and far-reaching) law. Techdirt reports that the New York Times is stepping up to the plate and challenging Washington: Reporter Charlie Savage of the New York Times filed a Freedom of Information Act request to find out the federal government’s interpretation of its own law…and had it refused. According to the federal government, its own interpretation of the law is classified. What sort of democracy are we living in when the government can refuse to even say how it’s interpreting its own law? That’s not democracy at all.

Meanwhile, on the cable “news” networks at approximately 11:50 PM Eastern / 8:50 PM Pacific, not a word about the police violence in Oakland

inothernews:

  • CNN’s Erin Burnett is talking about a missing baby case.
  • Fox has a repeat of The O’Reilly Factor talking to Don fucking King.
  • MSNBC has a repeat of The Ed Show.

Remember when the cable news networks actually covered the fucking news?
